Interactive game by artist Risa Puno

Players take turns using beanbags to maximize the realization of positive outcomes while minimizing the probability of negative ones. Risk management is the name of the game.

In this carnival-style game, two players use mallets to strike launchers that propel beanbags toward a suspended platform with a goal to have the most beanbags on the platform. However, the hanging platform dips and tilts with each beanbag that strikes its surface, and if they are distributed unevenly, the platform could tip over and spill beanbags over the edge. Because both participants are launching beanbags at the same platform, what one player does to sabotage the other could end up backfiring on themselves. To win, players must identify advantageous opportunities, evaluate potential losses, and prioritize strategic risks.

Risa Puno is an NYC-based sculpture and installation artist. She is interested in how interactivity and play can help us examine and understand how we relate to one another. She often explores how games can operate as simple metaphors for broader social interactions. Puno was awarded the UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant through the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and recently completed a public art commission for the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston. She has participated in residencies at John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Franconia Sculpture Park, and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Her work has been exhibited at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (Connecticut), Socrates Sculpture Park (New York), El Museo del Barrio (New York), The Bronx Museum of the Arts (New York), SPACES (Ohio), Galerie Stefan Röpke (Germany), and MMX Open Art Venue (Germany), among other exhibitions local and international. Puno grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. She studied art and medicine at Brown University and earned her MFA from New York University.
