Day and Night – A Color Study: Artwork by Emmy Star Brown
ON VIEW IN THE WINTER GARDEN GALLERY
Explore a new series of paintings by artist Emmy Star Brown, on view in the Winter Garden Gallery and intended to bring attention to the ways in which color relates to viewers’ feelings and personalities from a psychological perspective.
“Our first form of visual perception is contrast, followed by movement, shape and form, and lastly color,” the artist explains. Each piece in this series is painted on hand-stretched canvas and rendered in a distinct monochromatic palette. The collection—comprising both chromatic and achromatic works—features four primary colors and four auxiliary hues, each selected to ignite strong emotional reactions and prompt personal reflection on preferences for color.
Each painting in the series is accompanied by a list of associated traits and feelings, intended to be read after forming preferences. This interactive experience invites audiences to engage in a creative exercise—one that reexamines how color may strategically appeal to our feelings and behaviors and reveals hidden aspects of how we connect to ourselves and the larger world.
This exhibition features artwork presented by Brookfield Properties Arts & Events on view in the Winter Garden Gallery from August 26 – November 10, 2025.
